JUDY COLLINS - "Silent Night" LIVE 1996
Judy Collins sings everyone's favorite Christmas carol, "Silent Night" at a concert at the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina in 1996. This carol was first sung on Christmas eve, 1818, in the Austrian village of Oberndorf. The first English translation was in 1871 where it was published in a Methodist hymnal.
On this video clip, the Charlotte Children's Choir is singing with Judy. Musical Director Russell Walden is accompanying her on the piano. This is taken from Judy's 1997 DVD "Christmas at the Biltmore Estate."

Hear this through my depression when I was 17. But love the original version on "Wildflowers" even more. I find this one sounds a little like she is trying to get through the song it sounded too fast and finish it. Check out Sky Fell on that same album. Have 2 copies of Wildflowers to keep one in the car and one in the bedroom!

When I lived in Dublin, one of my housemates was friends with Sandy Denny, Sandy visited us a few times. We would sit by the fire, drinking tea, and singing until dawn. Her voice was so beautiful and she was so much fun. We all loved her. We were a tight group of friends. One was Neil Jordan, the director but at that time we were all still in college. Susie and Brian, the owners had a beautiful 2 year old, Aoife. I loved playing with and reading to her. She must be in her fifties now. Who knows where the time goes?

Like Barbra Streisand, she learned to preserve the very BEST of her voice, long past her prime recording years. Drugs, alcohol and cigarette smoke affect professional singers in different ways, but Judy's remains as fresh and untouched as it was in 1961. If this is what Heaven sounds like, then those of us on Earth have truly seen the best of both sides now. This is magnificent.

You've long been on the open road, sleepin' in the rain From dirty words and muddy cells Your clothes are smeared and stained But the dirty words and muddy cells will soon be judged insane So only stop to rest yourself, till you are off again And take off your thirsty boots and stay for a while Your feet are hot and weary from a dusty mile And maybe I can make you laugh, maybe I can try I'm just lookin' for the evening The morning in your eyes But tell me of the ones you saw as far as you could see Across the plain from field to town a-marchin' to be free And of the rusted prison gates that tumbled by decree Like laughin' children one by one They looked like you and me So take off your thirsty boots and stay for a while Your feet are hot and weary from a dusty mile And maybe I can make you laugh, maybe I can try I'm just lookin' for the evening And the morning in your eyes I know you are no stranger down the crooked rainbow trails From dancing cliff-edged shattered sills of slander shackled jails For the voices drift up from below as the walls are being scaled Yes all of this and more my friends Your song shall not be failed So take off your thirsty boots and stay for a while Your feet are hot and weary from a dusty mile And maybe I can make you laugh, maybe I can try I'm just lookin' for the evening The morning in your eyes Yes, you've long been on the open road, just sleepin' in the rain From dirty words and muddy cells Your clothes are smeared and stained But the dirty words and muddy cells will soon be hid in shame So only stop to rest yourself Till you'll be off again So take off your thirsty boots and stay for a while Your feet are hot and weary from a dusty mile And maybe I can make you laugh, maybe I can try I'm just lookin' for the evening The morning in your eyes
